Saturday, May 6, 2023 - General Election

The 2023 City General Municipal Election will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023, to elect three (3) City Council Members, at-large.

The City Secretary’s Office makes available a candidate’s packet to acquaint candidates with applicable requirements for the municipal’s election. For the May 6, 2023, municipal election, candidate packets will be available beginning January 3, 2023. The "Candidate Packet" is prepared in an effort to simplify and consolidate information on filing for local office and includes forms, instructions, and other useful information.  Please keep in mind, although the packet includes the required forms used to file for office, it is not all-inclusive.

The Application for a Place on the 2023 General Election Ballot must be filed in the City Secretary’s Office, 128 N. Dallas Avenue, no earlier than 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, and no later than 5:00 p.m., on Friday, February 17, 2023. Notice of Deadline to File an Application

Internet Posting Requirement for Political Subdivisions

Candidate Eligibility Requirements:

Mayor
In Type A General Law cities, every candidate for the office of mayor must meet the following qualifications:  

1) Be a United States citizen;
2) Have been a resident of Texas for at least twelve (12) months, as of the deadline for filing for the office;
3) Have resided in the city for at least twelve (12) months prior to the filing date for the election;
4) Be a registered voter;
5) Be 18 years of age or older upon the commencement of the term to be filled at the election;
6) Not have been convicted of a felony for which he or she has not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities; and
7) Not have been deemed mentally incompetent by a final judgment of a court.  
(Election Code Section 141.001; Local Government Code Section 22.032).          

City Council
In Type A General Law cities, the qualifications for the office of councilmember are:

1) Be a United States citizen;
2) Have been a resident of Texas for at least twelve (12) months as of the deadline for filing for the office;
3) Have resided in the city for at least six (6) months prior to the filing date for the election;
4) Be a registered voter;
5) Be 18 years of age or older upon the commencement of the term to be filled at the election;
6) Not have been convicted of a felony for which he or she has not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities; and
7) Not have been deemed mentally incompetent by a final judgment of a court.  
(Election Code Section 141.001; Local Government Code Sections 22.032 and 23.024).
